Calmaine Foods, the largest raw egg producer in the United States, has temporarily halted production at one of its facilities after avian influenza was detected, the company announced. It was announced on Tuesday.

The company announced that it had lost approximately 1.6 million egg-laying hens and 337,000 hens, or approximately 3.6% of its flock, due to the spread of infection. The virus was detected at a facility in Palmer County, Texas.

Mississippi-based Calmaine Foods said it will rely on other facilities for the time being to “minimize disruption to customers.”

Earlier this week, the Texas Department of State Health Services announced that a man was infected with bird flu after an outbreak of the disease among dairy cows. This is the second person confirmed to have contracted the virus in the United States.

CDC says The chance of someone getting bird flu is very low and eggs that are properly cooked and stored cannot spread the disease.
