A fundraiser in Howell on Sunday is benefiting a woman who suffered multiple complications after what was thought to be just a sore throat.
Daniel Amato, 28, had a strep throat that went completely wrong. Her body was taken over by Toxic Shock Syndrome.
It started in January. Doctors determined that the root of her problem was caused by a bacterial infection known as group A streptococcus. While the diagnosis of strep throat may seem routine to some, the infection was accompanied by rare and frightening complications.
“The toxins released damaged her heart, kidneys, liver and blood circulation, all due to the toxins released by the group A virus,” said Daniel’s mother Sally Amato.
Daniel has already lost both toes and his right foot has been amputated. Her dominant hand is completely amputated down to her forearm.
Daniel hopes the rest of his left hand can be saved, but expects the fingers on that side to be amputated. Despite the challenges he faces, Daniel’s heart continues to desire the best possible outcome.
Those who came to cheer her on at Elks Lodge felt the same way.
