According to the book’s logline, “J.Eyke was hospitalized at age 30 with anxiety, depression, and paranoia. He was then diagnosed with schizophrenia. Jake designed this book with alternating short chapters on his mother and son, written in large font for simplicity and clarity. While creating it, Jake’s worst paranoid thoughts were triggered. He overcomes this problem by writing some chapters in a free-form style, allowing us to experience what’s in his head with surprising insight and humor. Laurette reinforces that idea by highlighting the logic wrapped in her mother’s wisdom, as if to keep her son from falling into the abyss. Together they paint a picture of today’s mental health issues seen through dingy glass and shades of gray. schizophrenia cliff rWhat remains is a story of resilience and enduring hope for a better life. If you are suffering from this brain disease, or are a loving caregiver, you need to keep this book by your bed for a few days when you want to feel normal. you are not alone. “
In his heartfelt video message, Instagram, John McCook began. “I want to talk about a book that my wife and son wrote. My son Jake has schizophrenia. I wanted to write a book to help people understand what it is.”
John elaborated a bit more on the recognition of schizophrenia: “When Jake was first diagnosed with schizophrenia, it was actually alarming for Laurette and me, as it would be for anyone. There is a stigma attached to the word ‘schizophrenia.’ Yes, there is a wide range of what schizophrenia can mean or represent. Fortunately for us and for Jake, he doesn’t go to extremes with this issue. That’s an area we can control, and we immediately thought, ‘Let’s deal with this.’ ”
Additionally, John went on to heap praise on Laurette, saying, “We went to the doctor.” Some of them were helpful and some were not really helpful. So, Laurette, and I give Laurette all the credit for this, Laurette took charge of this for how we as her family dealt with this issue. Over the years, Rowlett has been not only a co-author with Jake, but also an advocate for him. More importantly, she was his mother…she was the best mother he’d ever had. When they decided they wanted to write a book together, I thought, “That’s great.” I was impressed that they wanted to do it and that Jake wanted to do it too. They took months and months and months to put this together and I purposefully didn’t want to read it. ”
John, a very proud father and husband, concluded the video by saying: Beyond being impressed, I was very proud of their accomplishments and what they accomplished, and I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this book or who is going through this with their own families. I was so proud of what the book had to offer. This is a useful book, wonderfully informative, and I recommend it with great pride. ”
