Ayurvedic diet for acid reflux relief: Tips for soothing digestive discomforts | Health

She added, “Acid reflux can be caused by an imbalance in the pitta dosha, which is associated with the fire and water elements and controls metabolism, digestion, and changes in the body. When the doshas get worse or become imbalanced, it can cause symptoms such as: Excessive heat, acidity, and inflammation in the digestive system can cause acid reflux. ”

Ayurvedic diet to reduce acid reflux

Dr. Geethi Varma also shared with HT Lifestyle some principles and dietary recommendations to consider for digestive discomfort.

1. General guidelines:

  • Chew well and eat in a calm atmosphere.
  • Avoid overeating or eating too quickly as it can put extra pressure on your digestive system.
  • Set meal times and establish regular eating habits.
  • Eating overly spicy or oily foods can cause acid reflux
  • Skipping meals can cause acid reflux
  • Avoid eating heavy meals late at night.

2. Dietary Recommendations:

  • Choose a plant-based diet that focuses on fresh, whole foods.
  • They prefer hot, cooked food to cold, raw food because it is easier to digest.
  • It contains various grains such as basmati rice, quinoa and barley.
  • Eat moderate amounts of healthy fats such as ghee (clarified butter), coconut oil, and olive oil.
  • Contains easily digestible proteins such as mung beans, lentils and tofu.
  • Cook with digestive spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger and fenugreek.
  • Limit or avoid spicy, fried, and processed foods, as they can exacerbate acid reflux symptoms.
  • Milk is a very good option for those who are not lactose intolerant
  • Minimize intake of caffeine, alcohol, sodas, and acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.
  • Drink lukewarm water throughout the day to stay hydrated. However, avoid drinking large amounts of water on an empty stomach.

3. Herbal Medicine:

  • Aloe vera juice: Drink a small amount of pure aloe vera juice before meals to soothe the digestive tract.
  • Licorice tea: Drink licorice tea as it may reduce inflammation in the esophagus.
  • Chamomile Tea: Enjoy chamomile tea, known for its calming and calming properties.

4. Diet and lifestyle:

  • Avoid lying down immediately after eating. Wait at least 2-3 hours before lying down or going to bed.
  • Practice stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.
  • Engage in regular physical activity to support healthy digestion.
  • Consider incorporating Ayurvedic practices such as self-massage (abhyanga) and gentle yoga poses to aid digestion.
