Ensuring adequate zinc intake is important for various groups, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, growing children, vegetarians, and people with certain health conditions. Here’s why these populations require special attention to meet their zinc needs: “Zinc is a powerful nutrient that is essential for a variety of body functions. Here are six groups that often require special attention to zinc intake,” says nutritionist Bhakti Arora・Mr. Kapur says.

Elderly: As we age, zinc absorption is impaired and can lead to zinc deficiency. Prioritize zinc-rich foods such as fortified cereals, dairy products, and lean meats. (Shutterstock)

Pregnant and lactating women: Zinc requirements increase during pregnancy and lactation. Include zinc-rich foods like chickpeas, tofu, and dairy products for a healthy pregnancy. (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Women on or off birth control: Hormonal changes can affect zinc levels. Make sure you get enough from foods like spinach, mushrooms, and seafood. (Freepik)
