Have you ever packed your workout clothes for a vacation?
Perhaps the destination is important.
Data from exercise apps that track users’ physical location and search history shows that travelers tend to be more active in certain locations than others.
Fitness app Strava shows that travelers are more likely to exercise when visiting smaller cities in Europe. With his 100 million users in 195 countries, the app shows that travelers are more active than locals in the following areas:
- split, croatia
- dodecanese islands, greece
- lagos, portugal
- Las Palmas, Spain
- Nord Auldal, Norway
With the exception of Nord Auldal, which is part of Norway’s Valdres region, these are all warm coastal cities in southern Europe that are a big draw for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, cycling, fishing, and skiing. This small municipality of about 6,400 people is about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Lillehammer, the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
Conversely, the company’s data shows that travelers are less active than locals in some parts of the Caribbean and Central America.
- Republic of Trinidad and Tobago
- dominican republic
- Philippines
- Venezuela
- Costa Rica
For those who find it difficult to exercise while on vacation, take comfort in knowing that even active travelers tend to break free from their usual routines while on vacation. According to Strava data, nearly 4 in 10 runners reduced their running time by at least 30% during their 2022 summer vacation.
