Ray Twinny Recreation Complex now offers a fitness center available with the purchase of a Town Recreation Pass
Newmarket residents are enjoying a new place to get their workout in with the opening of a municipal fitness center at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.
The City of Newmarket celebrated the opening of the new facility on March 25, but the center has been operational for the past week. Town officials and residents took the opportunity to gather and tour the new facility.
Resident Joseph Daniel said he’s happy to see more space at the facility and is taking advantage of it being closer to home than the Magna Center Fitness facility.
“They turned it into something that now allows the area to be repopulated,” he says. “It’s pretty nice…I like the new feel of the facilities.”
The project has been in the works since last June and has an estimated project cost of $135,000. Staff said they were able to reuse some equipment and make better use of the space while still providing the much-needed facility. Staff hopes to sell enough memberships to cover the cost of the facility.
Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said the new fitness center will serve a large number of people.
“We’re always looking for opportunities to provide more services and better services, and we’re actually looking for more opportunities to be healthy and active,” Taylor said. “This is really going to provide another great amenity to this part of the city.”
Nikita Kravchenko said she wanted to use the facility to maintain her health because it was close to her home. She said the equipment is in good condition.
“Overall it’s a good gym. If you want to come here, that’s great. There aren’t that many people coming here at once,” he said, adding that membership fees “are not that high compared to other gyms.” added.
Director of Recreation and Culture Colin Service said it was exciting to transform the space into something that could be used in a variety of ways.
Compared to the Magna Center facility, Service said it is “very similar in terms of the amount of equipment and equipment available.”
Its equipment includes treadmills, upright bikes, virtual training cycles, rowers, and more. There are also free weights and strength training equipment. More equipment will be introduced, including upper body ergometers and massage chairs.
“It’s been very well used and people are really enjoying the space, which is great to see,” Service said.
