As someone who makes a living writing about fitness, the home gym I have set up is, to put it simply, pathetic. I’m talking about a set of adjustable dumbbells, a variety of intertwined resistance bands, and my favorite yoga mat. Supplemented with outdoor running, a gym membership, and studio training, I am practicing a sad assortment of home fitness equipment. But if you ask me about my dream setup, I’ll show you a picture of the Amp.
amplifier ($1,795) is a new addition to the world of smart fitness equipment, and unlike anything I’ve tried before. At first glance, you might think you’re looking at a very luxurious and high-tech coat rack. It’s a sleek silver column with one arm that hides the cables. The minimalist design hides the fact that it’s an absolute workhorse of a strength training machine that can train your upper body, core, and lower body. But what’s really cool about Amp is its intelligent algorithm that learns from your performance and adapts to your needs, fitness level, and goals.
Amp can be reserved now with a $99 deposit. This deposit will be used towards the total amount after the machine is available and you have earned a free 1-year subscription to the app. The actual machine is scheduled to begin shipping in early 2025. Fortunately, I had a chance to preview the training system. Keep reading to find out about my experience and whether I think Amp is worth the splurge.
What I like about the amp
As soon as I saw the Amp, I fell in love with the simple, understated look of this machine. It can be easy to miss if it’s mounted on the wall. Even if your guests notice this minimal silver column, they’re more likely to be intrigued than surprised.
That said, its beauty is really only on top of its incredibly functional and user-friendly design. We’ve found that using smart fitness gear can have a steep learning curve. It can be too high-tech and unnecessarily complicated. However, the amplifier is intuitive to operate. One knob controls the height and angle of the arm, and a second knob allows you to adjust the weight (up to 100 pounds). Various attachments can be easily attached and removed from the arm. There’s also a small table where you can place your phone, so you can easily view the included apps during your workout and charge your phone at the same time.
But what was most notable to me about the Amp was the workout feature. For example, Amp offers several different smart modes during which the weight automatically adjusts to achieve specific effects. For example, in band mode, the weights are heavier during the concentric portions of the workout, similar to using a resistance band. Drop set mode reduces weight every time you pause for 3 seconds during your workout, allowing you to complete sets without taking a break to reduce weight.
What I liked most about the demo were the gamified challenges. In it, we were asked to “catch” water droplets while performing bicep curls. This game gave me motivation and pushed me to lift heavier and for longer than I might have done on the last set of my workout. Thanks to this, I was able to stick to a pace that maximizes muscle work (lowering quickly and rising slowly).
The system is also designed to learn from your workouts and use that information to create a customized experience. That might mean suggesting a lower body workout if you find yourself only doing upper body for a few sessions in a row, or suggesting progressively heavier weights to encourage progress. .
Points to note about amplifiers
I’ve only used the Amp once, so I can’t speak to how well the system adapts to your fitness level and goals over time, but during the one workout I tried, the Amp I was able to preview how the was “learning” my weight capabilities.
It’s also a strength training machine first and foremost. We work with a huge number of trainers and have access to Pilates and yoga workouts, as well as more traditional strength training. However, it is not intended as a cardio machine.
Who is this amplifier best for?
Amp is perfect for anyone looking for a premium home training system. Perfect for beginners and more advanced fitness levels alike.
Is an amp worth the splurge?
At $1,795 with a $23 monthly subscription fee, the Amp is an investment. But I think it’s worth it because it’s very functional and the workouts are very well designed. You can easily replace your gym membership.
