Michael, Alfred F., MD Alfred F. Michael MD, loved by all who knew him, passed away peacefully at his home on September 25, 2022 surrounded by his family. Alfred was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 10, 1928. He received his medical degree in 1953 from the Temple University School of Medicine. After an internship and a six-month training at St. Christopher’s Hospital for He Children, he joined United States Airlines. He served as a medical officer from 1955 to 1957. He then completed a pediatric residency at his Children’s in Cincinnati and continued his training in immunology and nephrology as a research fellow at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine with Robert Good and Robert Vernier (1960-1964). In Copenhagen he spent two years (1965-1967) as a Guggenheim Fellow in kidney research before returning to the University of Minnesota Medical School to pursue a career. He devoted himself to medical education, research, and clinical care. He and his colleague Robert Vernier developed and led a kidney disease program for children. He has published extensively and has been involved in the education of over 100 fellows, many of whom continue academic medicine. From 1986 to his 1996, he served as Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. In 1986, he was named Regent Professor of Pediatrics by the Board of Trustees of the University of Minnesota. In 1996, he became Dean of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, a position he held until 2002. He retired in 2006 when he was 78 years old. He is President of the American Society of Nephrology, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Alumni Achievement Award in Clinical Sciences and Graduate of the Year (Temple University School of Medicine), John Peters Award (American Society of Nephrology Lifetime Achievement Award) and Guggenheim Award. . Other awards include the Bolles Rogers Award, Shotwell Award, Harold S. Diehl Award, Gold Headed Cane in Pediatrics, and Regent’s Award. He participates in the Wall of Discovery and Scholars Walk at the University of Minnesota. He is an established researcher with the American Heart Association, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Institutes of Health, and is a member of more than 20 professional societies. He is a co-founder of the Minnesota Vikings Children’s Fund, a founder of the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital Fund, and a founding member of the Pediatric Nephrology Sub-Board. Other Board members include St. Mary’s Health Clinics, Ministries Foundation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Minnesota Vikings Children’s Fund, and No Time For Poverty. He was also a member of the Ignatius Associates. As devoted to the medical care and welfare of all his children, Alfred was even more devoted to his family. He nurtured those closest to him with the gift of love and time. His love for his wife Jeanne is immense. The two have enjoyed traveling, experiencing the arts, playing bridge, and watching the Minnesota Twins together over the years. His daughters and grandchildren were his constant joy and he had an amazing ability to make them feel like they were the most important thing in the room and to guide them with an ever-present loving and gentle hand. He recalled and told the details of his grandchildren’s lives and schooling, nurturing their hopes and dreams with his age-defying compassion. Exercising the same talents he gave, he caught many prize walleye pollock from his beloved Seagull Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail and stayed there every year for over fifty years. As Mo said, he grew some of the best tomatoes in Minnesota, earning him the nickname “Tomato Man” at his home in Carondelet Village. Alfred is survived by his parents Alfred F. Michael Sr. and Emma M. Michael (Peters), brother Thomas John Michael, cousin Robert Warren, and ex-wife, mother of his three daughters. Predeceased by Jane Jewson Michael. Survived by wife Jeanne Jones-Michael, daughters Mary-Michael Sierrad (Ted), Susan Fuller (Kurt), Carol Carlson (Blake), son-in-law Matt Jones, and step-daughter Jenny Jones. , grandchildren Michael Fuller, Katie Carlson, Betsy Carlson, Matthew Fuller, John Carlson, Jack Carlson, Madeleine Leventhal, Thomas Fuller (Jenny), Geoffrey Fuller (Emily), and nephew Eric John Carlson.
