Al Roker reflected on how far he's come since suffering a health scare last year. Today's weather forecaster shared an image of his current step count and recent step count for 2022 on social media. He has made some remarkable progress.
“One year ago, I was still suffering after coming home from the hospital,” he wrote on Instagram. “This week marks his 60th consecutive day of over 10,000 steps per day.”
In November 2022, Al was hospitalized after a blood clot in his leg dislodged and the blood clot traveled into his lungs. Shortly after she returned home, she developed internal bleeding and had to be readmitted to the hospital. Al had two bleeding ulcers and underwent a seven-hour surgery in which her doctors removed and fixed part of her colon, removed her gallbladder, and repaired her duodenum, part of her small intestine. TODAY.com previously reported.
By December, Al was slowly making progress while recuperating at home. His activity counter reflects that, with only 1,262 steps per day for him and 5,083 steps per day. It was an impressive step count given his poor health, his wife Deborah Roberts and his daughter Leila Roker said when they revealed the full story of his hospitalization.
“While we were decompressing and debriefing, Deborah and Layla talked about how difficult and exhausting it was,” he explained to TODAY.com in November 2023.
Al was shocked to learn how poorly he was feeling, but used the experience to stay focused.
“I'm still far from 100%, but I'm definitely a lot better, and once I realized that, I was bad at that, but I'm beyond that,” he said.
He underwent knee replacement surgery in May and used his recovery to strengthen his resolve.
“(I thought) Okay, what do I do? I'm just going to get better, come on, next year,” he said. “I'm not the type to look back too much on the past. I'd rather look forward.”
These days, Roker's light walking day seems to be 10,641 steps. On my most active day, I took 15,161 steps. It's all part of his ongoing health journey.
“(It's been) a long road, but so many people have helped me along the way,” Al wrote on Instagram.
