AHCJ Awards 2024 International Health Study Fellowships

The Society of Healthcare Journalists has awarded 2024 International Medical Research Fellowships to four journalists who want to pursue articles or projects that compare aspects of the U.S. health care system to European countries.

This program is commonwealth fundis designed for mid-career journalists and is returning for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Fellows will interview patients, health care providers, and policy makers in the United States and abroad.

2024 fellows and their projects:

  • Ariel Cohen, CQ Roll Call: What candidates running in 2024 elections seeking stricter abortion laws can learn from France's 14-week abortion ban and how public perceptions of abortion restrictions differ between the U.S. and France Find out what.
  • Avery Martinez, KVIA/ABC-7 El Paso: From Spain to the U.S.-Mexico border, we explore the stigma of mental health: how culture, language, tradition, and medicine interact.
  • Eleanor Klibanoff, Texas Tribune: What Texas can learn from Italy's massive investment in small-scale solutions to rural primary care problems.
  • Usha Lee McFarling, STAT: Despite Portugal having significant problems with racial health disparities and structural racism in health care, despite low spending and a deep legacy of colonialism. , examines why Portugal outperforms the United States on key health indicators.

International Health Study Fellows will continue their current jobs and receive financial support for customized seminars, mentoring, and field reporting during the fellowship period. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2024.
