Steingold’s of Chicago, a mainstay of the city’s modern Jewish deli scene, has opened a takeout and delivery-only location, stocked with bagels, babka, and black-and-white cookies.
Owner Aaron Steingold says: Steingold bakehouseThe restaurant, a smaller sister spot to Lakeview Deli, has received a “great reception” since opening on Saturday, March 8, at 2939 W. Grand Ave., near the Humboldt Park/Westtown border.
The bakery started with little fanfare except for the announcements. on instagram. Still, fans and neighbors are quickly coming to the squat brick building for original pieces, including classics like Rocks and Schmair, as well as hot pieces. For now, Bakehouse only offers pre-prepared items, such as corned beef that you can take home by the pound and deli containers of schmaltzy potato salad made at Bakehouse. Steingold hopes to eventually offer a made-to-order option within the next month or so.
They ate “almost everything,” Steingold said. There is no seating inside and there are no plans to add dine-in service, but the team hopes to introduce some outdoor picnic tables in the parking lot on weekends. Although the landlord has agreed to the plans, Steingold said there are still some logistical details to finalize.
But this bustling new bakehouse is just the prelude to Wrigleyville’s long-awaited deli expansion. Steingold and his team aim to open in May in the former home of West Town Bakery in the Hotel Zachary, across from Wrigley Field. The new store is affiliated with Marquee Development, a real estate and investment company owned by Ricketts (who also owns the Chicago Cubs), and will offer popular bagels and sandwiches as well as new products such as bagel dogs on a stick and latke tots. Two new openings in a matter of months is a dramatic trajectory for a major restaurant group, but Steingold’s has been building momentum behind the scenes for years. Originally founded in 2017 in North Center, the deli moved in 2021 to a prominent location next to Lakeview’s historic Music Box Theater. Although the move wasn’t far, just a 20-minute walk from the original location, it was an important catalyst, with a much larger kitchen and ideal perch for walkers. The additional workspace gave the team room to experiment (and thus inventive new menu items) and gain greater recognition among the theater’s many patrons.
Steingold’s also had a location inside the Fulton Galley, a food hall that closed after five months. Brighter days await. Stay tuned for more information on the Wrigleyville deli’s opening date.
