From preventive and rehabilitative services to providing health education and health promotion, primary health care addresses all common health problems across the lifespan of individuals, families, and communities. Investing in designing integrated health systems based on disease prevention, education, and treatment using a person-centered approach will ensure the health and well-being of people.
JSI health experts met with policy makers, health workers, and program implementers at two recent health conferences in Ethiopia and Egypt to provide equitable access to quality health care for all. strengthened several aspects of the primary health care system.
Person-centered care strategies can foster individual and community-driven demand and change health system behavior.
“Creating healthcare around people establishes a response system that considers the precise needs of individuals and communities. We need to focus on integrating vertical programs in non-communicable diseases,” said Soumya Alva, Senior Monitoring Evaluation and Learning Director at MOMENTUM Knowledge Accelerator. “We also need to tailor human-centered programs to the most vulnerable populations.”
Existing community structures also need to be involved in the governance of primary health care programs. A continuous feedback loop between community members and the programs that serve them is critical to ensuring the success of an individual’s holistic care.
