A faculty member from Carle Illinois College of Medicine has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
Bill King, Ralph A. Andersen Endowed Professor in the GCOE’s Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, was awarded this honor because: It has a measurable impact on quality of life, economic development and social welfare. ”

King entered the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. King has also been appointed to her Biomedical and Translational Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.He specializes in manufacturing science, micro and nanotechnologyadvanced materials, and thermal energy systems.
He is the co-founder of three companies, including Anasys Instruments, which was acquired by Bruker, and sells materials characterization instruments widely used in academia and industry. He also co-founded Fast Radius, a company that sells software-driven manufacturing, and was recognized by the World Economic Forum as one of the world’s most advanced factories. King was the founder and chief technology officer of the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, now known as MxD. The Institute is he one of the first institutions of the National Manufacturing Innovation Network. In this role, he created and led his portfolio of $100 million technology projects.
King is an elected fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society for the Advancement of Science, American Physical Society, Society of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and SME International.
King will take office in a special ceremony in June 2023. It takes place at NAI 12.th Annual meeting in Washington DC
