To address the rise in mental health problems post-pandemic, North Shore Technical Community College responds by launching a new program to train students who want to enter the mental health field to become psychiatric technicians doing. Also, thanks to her $20,000 donation from the American Psychiatric Association, the college will have the initial funding it needs to launch her program in February.
“The Psytech program was developed in response to the behavioral health needs in our community. It helps us provide the right expertise,” said William Wainwright, president of Northshore Tech.
Psychiatric Technicians work with and care for people suffering from a variety of mental health issues. Their tasks range from monitoring a patient’s physical and emotional health, to assisting with daily living, to monitoring medication and personal hygiene. The goal of the new program is to prepare students to provide safe and therapeutic patient care to individuals with mental and behavioral health needs in an effective and ethical manner.
