The holiday season is a time of joy and happiness for some, but it can also be stress- and anxiety-inducing for others.

Ashley Angerer-Blunt, director of outpatient services at Burrell Behavioral Health, offers advice on how to spend the holiday season.

“The holiday season is really stressful,” says Angerer-Blunt.

Angerer-Blunt says holiday season stress can be caused by a variety of factors, including the loss of family and jobs, and the financial strain that comes with the holiday season.

“One of the things we like to talk about is having a self-care game plan,” Angele-Blunt said.

These self-care game plans include:

  • Get enough sleep.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Reach out to close friends and family.
  • Keep up with your physical health.

Angerer-Blunt says it’s also important to give yourself grace.

“It’s a tough time of the year, so I try to cut my slack so I can connect with the things that really give me joy,” says Angela-Blount.

Setting boundaries is another piece of advice Angerer-Blunt recommends.

“It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to go to an event and leave early,” said Angela Brandt.

Burrell Behavioral Health offers many mental health services, including emergency crisis centers.

Located at 1805 E. Walnut, Columbia, Missouri 65201.
