A Maine law or PTP that allows hospitals to petition judges to place mentally ill patients in conditional “progressive treatment programs” was accused of murdering his brother Gabe Damour at Thanksgiving in Poland. Butterfield told Maine Total Coverage that he suffers from severe schizophrenia. They say they tried multiple times, but their pleas were ignored by the hospital.Former state senator John Nutting sponsored the 2010 legislation that created the program. I would say the results might have been different if PTP had been given to the patient from the hospital,” Nutting said. “Well, you have lost a fine young man. Society will pay to put him in a mental hospital or prison for the rest of his life. It is totally unnecessary to be in such an unnecessary situation.” It is a conditional release from a hospital after admission for mental health treatment in which a district court judge sets the terms of release at a public hearing upon application from the hospital. A judge can order a patient to participate in an outpatient treatment program, and if the patient does not comply with the program, the court can institutionalize the patient. They ignored their pleas to provide. They say Butterfield was taken to St. Mary’s by the police at least five times in the past year and was released each time. Butterfield’s ex-girlfriend Yaicha Probincher, who knew him best and kept him out of society, needs to be held with some sort of accountability. MaineHealth and St. Both Mary’s declined to answer questions about Butterfield’s hospital visit and PTP program, citing patient privacy concerns.

A friend of Butterfield’s told Maine’s General Press that he has severe schizophrenia; They say they made multiple attempts to get Butterfield’s long-term care, but their pleas were ignored by the hospital.

Former state senator John Nutting sponsored the law in 2010 when he created the program. Had Butterfield been given the PTP, he says the results could have been different.

“This young man should have been placed in blue or white paper status and placed in a court-ordered PTP plan upon discharge,” Nutting said. “Well, a fine young man has died. Society will pay to put him in a mental hospital or prison for the rest of his life. It is totally unnecessary to be in such an unnecessary situation.”

A PTP is a conditional release from a hospital after admission for mental health treatment in which a district court judge sets the terms of release at a public hearing upon application from the hospital.

Judges mandate that patients participate in an outpatient treatment program, and courts can institutionalize patients if they do not comply with the program.

Friends of Butterfield say staff at both Brunswick’s Mid Coast Hospital and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston ignored their pleas to provide Butterfield with long-term care. They say Butterfield has been taken to St. Mary’s by police at least five times in the past year and released each time.

“I think those who didn’t give him what he needed or who didn’t listen to the people who knew him best and who kept him out of society should be held accountable.” said Butterfield’s ex-girlfriend, Yaitha Probincher.

Butterfield is currently being held in Androscoggin County Jail without bail. He is charged with murder.

Both MaineHealth and St. Mary’s declined to answer questions about Butterfield’s hospital visits and PTP programs, citing patient privacy concerns.
