It tackles the intense emotions of neighborhood teens.
I’m Alberto Camargo, a college town neighborhood reporter. Learn what the Florida Department of Psychology offers troubled teens at affordable rates.
Without insurance, just one treatment session can cost between $75 and $200, according to the National Institutes of Health.
FSU Psychology Clinic’s Teen Emotion Skills Training Group is an option for a fraction of that cost, at just $12 per session.
No insurance required.
“Adolescence is a very sensitive time for emotional regulation and identity formation,” says Katie Broschek, a psychology doctoral student who helps organize the group.
She says some teens may be able to get through adolescence without needing help.
“However, in some cases, the situation can be more serious, with teens thinking about self-harm or suicide, which is when they should seek help.
According to the NIH, 13 to 17 percent of teens self-harm, starting at age 11 and peaking at ages 15 to 17.
The FSU teen group plans to use dialectical behavioral therapy.
DBT focuses on changing problematic thoughts and feelings by providing teens with the skills they need to overcome difficult situations.
“As a clinic, we are meant for short-term treatment,” Broshek said. “We give you what you need, and our goal is that you don’t need us. And that you get through these really difficult situations stronger. It is to be able to do so.”
We also looked at other budget options in our area.
Leon County Schools has certified psychologists in-house for students.

I also contacted several agencies, including the Children and Families Association and the Neighborhood Medical Center, but neither were able to talk to me.
Here at FSU, weekly group sessions begin once we have enough participants. According to the Psychology Clinic, the ideal number is 4 to 10 people per group.
