Twice a week, seniors in Manenberg have the opportunity to de-stress in fitness classes.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, Mary Louw, founder of the nonprofit No Fear Fitness Team, checks the pace of seniors at the People Center.
She started her nonprofit two years ago to promote healthy lifestyles and make a difference in her community.
“I started a non-profit, No Fear fitness team two years ago, with 6 members demonstrating and participating in all exercises. You need to exercise because it helps in. Exercising also helps your immune system fight disease and help keep you from getting sick,” she says.
Louw, a marathon runner, says the goal is to help pensioners stay active rather than just sitting in the same place all day.
“I love my job and share my experience with my seniors. I also help them make better life choices. We can meet and enjoy two days of exercise,” says Louw.
Manenberg residents face many social challenges, so she wants to bring her class into the wider community.
“We face challenges such as gender-based violence, gangs, substance abuse, unemployment, school dropouts and teenage pregnancy. Even walking from one street to another can be dangerous and difficult. .
