Weight loss: ‘I lost 12st barely doing exercise and eating what I want

There are countless approaches to weight loss, some of which are considered universally effective. Surprisingly, the most successful methods often don’t rely on intense exercise habits.

A British dieter has achieved remarkable success – shedding 10 stone – by taking an unconventional approach to traditional weight loss methods.


Before starting her journey, Mel, who goes by @mellymaysworld on TikTok, believed that exercise was the backbone of weight loss, but she is now challenging this widely held belief.

Her journey, which ended in September 2023, saw the slim woman drop from 22 stone 7 lbs to her target weight of 12 stone.

Mel offered this for creating a calorie deficit.

“I lost 168 pounds (12th),” she declared in the clip. “I started my weight loss journey at 315 pounds (22nd 7lb) and achieved my goal weight of 12th in September 2023.”

What’s most notable about Mel’s accomplishments is that she rejected intense gym training in favor of simpler, more sustainable methods.

“People always ask me if I did a lot of exercise while traveling, and to be honest, I hardly did,” she confessed.

“I know we’ve all been fooled by diet culture that we need to continually go to the gym and sweat it out to lose weight, but that’s not true.

“Exercise isn’t as effective at reducing fat as we thought. Let’s be honest, you’re more likely to lose weight by just wandering around the house or going for a walk than by going to the gym and building strength. much more effective in reducing

The dieter found success with simple daily walks rather than relying on grueling gym sessions.

“For the first six months of my journey, I walked for an hour every day. Walking is free, easy, low-impact and great for fat loss,” Mel said.

While daily walks helped a lot, she stressed that maintaining a calorie deficit was central to Mel’s transformation.

“Do whatever you can to make you feel good, whatever you enjoy, but you don’t need that to lose fat. Calories are the most important thing.”

To maintain a sustainable approach, Mel cut back on mainstream diets, including eliminating entire food groups.

“Something like increasing your protein and fiber intake will help you feel fuller longer, and of course carbohydrates are great for maintaining energy levels,” Mel said. The body needs them just like any other macronutrient.

“I owe my success to not having dietary restrictions. The less restrictive the journey, the more sustainable it will be.

“I’m living proof that you can lose weight no matter what you eat as long as you stay within your calorie goal.”
