Dr Michael Kyeremanten, chief executive and registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), announced that the council plans to regulate the use of the title ‘doctor’ by medical practitioners.
It is common to see and hear many traditional medicine practitioners on television and radio calling themselves “doctors” while promoting their abilities and the effectiveness of their medicines.
However, speaking to Ghanaweb on the sidelines of an event organized by the council in Accra, Dr Michael Kyeremanten condemned the practice, adding that only the council is obliged by law to award titles to medical practitioners. Ta.
“If someone uses the title doctor in any field, only the Council can give the authority under Law No. 575 of 2000, and that authority will be regulated. The company plans to re-engage with stakeholders and is launching advertising guidelines to regulate various types of advertising.
“You can’t go on TV or the radio and blurt out that you’re a doctor without going through due process with Congress. So all of this helps the public have access to all kinds of information. It’s an information field. When you see someone on TV and you go to their website and enter their name or contact number, all the information about their practice as it should be or as authorized by the Traditional Medicine Practice Council. ” says Dr. Michael Kyeremanten.
