Are you participating in Ironman California? Here’s what sports dietitians recommend.

Road closed. Make plans for the weekend. Well, this morning we have Ryan Miller, a Kaiser Permanente nutritionist and Dr. Scott Meyer. Join Kaiser as you talk about how athletes actually prepare their bodies and the food they put into them. So let’s start with that. Isn’t it just a race to do an Ironman without any preparation? This requires careful preparation, right? Oh yeah. No, this is what I mean, people put in hours a day, days a week, and it builds up as they get closer to the race, and they do what’s called a taper, where they don’t. Masu. They are in great shape, so train hard. Their bodies are ready to take on any challenge come race day. For those who don’t know what Iron Man is. Oh, and they swim 2.4 miles, then bike ride 112 miles, and then run a 20-mile marathon. That’s amazing. No, it’s not for everyone and the people who do it and get it done are dedicated to doing it, right? That means it’s running every day. They also swim as often as possible, right? A person must have some events that are stronger than others, right? Well, there are certainly people who participate as swimmers, cyclists, and runners to try to strengthen other athletes. Yeah. Like I said, one of the other parts of it. But that’s part of everything, right? It’s part of the training. Understood. As mentioned earlier, working out is also important. But it’s also what you put inside your body. What should people who participate in such a passionate endeavor focus on? Yeah. And to actually keep training, it takes a lot of practice to figure out what foods work for you and what foods really give you energy. Athletes don’t particularly focus on taste or flavor, which of course is important. They also look at what is the best fuel for my body to maximize peak performance in both recovery and performance. Do the best they can. Typical meals are served here. Contains traditional carbohydrates and protein. Vegetables are very important for antioxidants. It is rounded. They are really balanced. We call it the Balanced Athlete Plate. When we work with athletes, we try our best to include all of these different aspects. Carbohydrates are okay because you are training the back of your head, right? That’s right, carbohydrates are actually the most important because your muscles store glycogen. These are stores that help athletes win the entire race. It’s a long race. Lasts for hours. So it’s not just one meal, it’s what they do during the race, including the bar. This is a gel and is kept in your pocket. The same goes for pockets. They will be in different spots throughout the race. correct? right. Along with various electrolyte drinks. The stations are all on the website and will help you maintain your glycogen stores. So these are probably like high protein, high carbohydrate, or mostly carbohydrates. Also contains protein. What is this gummy thing? I mean, they’re gummies. Therefore, it’s a great way to get carbohydrates into your body when you’re feeling good. Yeah. that’s right. You don’t have to chew a lot of whole foods. So let me ask you a question right away. For example, for the average middle-of-the-road Ironman competitor, time is up. How long does it take them to complete the race? Oh, I mean, yeah. It’s not a joke. Yeah. And what is the first event, that is, what is the beginning? Do they all swim at the same time? They start in the water. They ride bikes down the river and run a marathon and end there. Very good. Okay. Now have a good race. How many Ironmans have you accomplished? You’re not done yet. Understood. I was going to ask for your support. absolutely. And they absolutely need it from you guys. Well, thank you very much for coming. I feel like I’ve seen the world as I see it
