Grey hair can occur for a variety of reasons, and identifying the underlying cause may help you find the right treatment.

Fortunately, if a hair deficiency is proven to be the cause of your grey hair, supplements may be able to help.

One woman recently posted on her social media account that she had reversed her grey hair at age 46 thanks to supplements containing folic acid and copper.

The haircare enthusiast, known on TikTok as @brookethestylust, believes that taking a daily multivitamin has helped address some of her hair concerns.

“If you’ve ever wondered if it’s possible to grow back your gray hair, I want to tell you that it’s possible,” she declares in the video.

“I’m not saying this happens to everyone, but I suffered from severe hair loss two years ago and my hair started going grey.

“I thought so. [I’m] I’m 46 and this happens all the time. But I added some nighttime minerals to my multivitamin (copper and folic acid) and my gray hairs started growing back.”

While there’s limited evidence that supplements can treat gray hair, research suggests they can support overall health.

By addressing the underlying deficiency, supplements may actually restore gray hair color.

Dr Christina Han, dermatologist at XYON Health, False Creek Dermatology, confirmed to GB News that nutritional deficiencies can cause premature greying of hair.

She said: “Premature greying of hair may be linked to deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins such as vitamin B12, copper and iron.”

Experts also stressed that while genetics play an important role in hair colour, addressing nutritional deficiencies can slow the progression of greying in some people.

Like grey hair, thinning hairline can also be a sign of nutritional deficiencies, experts say.

“Deficiencies in iron, zinc and certain B vitamins are closely linked to hair loss. Iron deficiency in particular can interfere with the production of haemoglobin, which is essential for carrying oxygen to hair follicles, leading to hair thinning,” Dr Han said.

The experts continued: “Replacing deficiencies, especially those related to iron and B vitamins, can significantly improve hair health.”

But she also cautioned: “The effectiveness of treating these conditions by addressing the deficiency will depend on the severity of the deficiency and how early it is identified.”

Additionally, it is important to work with your doctor to determine if nutritional deficiencies exist.

A simple blood test can reveal your levels of various vitamins and minerals and tell you if your diet needs improvement.

Plus, addressing nutritional deficiencies can help prevent not only hair problems but also signs of premature aging.

Dr Han warns that these “may contribute to other signs of premature ageing, including skin changes such as dryness, wrinkling and lack of elasticity.”

Luckily, these problems can be avoided by eating a diet rich in the right nutrients.
