O-U Issues Kashrus Advisory About Jelly Belly

OU Kosher issued a notice that due to changes in the manufacturing process, candy made in some Jelly Belly plants will no longer be able to bear the Kosher label. The message makes it clear that the issue is not related to the product’s formula or ingredients, but rather to an issue with shared equipment.

The warning reads:

“Jelly Belly has informed the Orthodox Union that due to changes at one of its factories, Jelly Belly products produced at that location will soon no longer be kosher. Jelly Belly’s formula will not change, but the production changes will result in other non-kosher products being produced on common equipment. As a result, all Jelly Belly products sold outside of North America will soon be sold in packaging without the OU symbol. Jelly Belly products produced in limited quantities in North America (primarily seasonal items) will also lose the OU symbol. All Jelly Belly bulk jelly beans sold in North America will continue to be produced under OU oversight, and most of the retail-sized varieties North American consumers see on store shelves will remain certified.”

The warning concludes: “Consumers are encouraged to check for the presence of the OU symbol on all Jelly Belly packaging before purchasing products.”
