Mental health incident prompts Napa shelter-in-place order

Updated Tuesday, 12:43 p.m. Napa police said they blocked off a block of South Jefferson Street and told residents to shelter in place Monday night after a resident reported a mental health emergency. The incident ended without any arrests or reports of injuries.

Police issued evacuation orders via text message and social media around 10 p.m., and the 300 block of South Jefferson was closed off from Old Sonoma Road to Locust Street, with residents told to stay in their homes.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 11:30 p.m.

Police Lt. Christopher Pacheco said officers and the mental health task force set up a perimeter around the home and blocked off nearby roads as a precaution, which “allowed staff to focus on the person in need and prevented any unintended or outside interference or disruption,” he said in an email.

Pacheco would not disclose the name of the person who prompted police to be dispatched, citing medical confidentiality. The person has not been arrested and police are investigating whether a crime was committed, Pacheco said.
