Don’t believe these 3 myths about coffee, say registered dietitians

To find out what’s fact and what’s fiction, we asked a registered dietitian. Maddie Pasquariello and Roxana Ehsani The most common coffee myths you’ll come across.

Myth #1: Coffee is bad for you.

“One of the things that’s widely accepted in the nutrition world is that coffee is really good for us,” Pasquariello tells Make It.

As long as you follow Dietary Guidelines If you’re consuming less than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, or about four cups of coffee, “you don’t need to worry; you’re probably getting the benefits.”

Plus, “coffee is a natural stimulant that increases alertness, boosts energy and productivity, and improves athletic performance,” Ehsani says.

“But be careful because they can add things that can be unhealthy, like cream, sugar, syrup or honey.”

Myth #2: “You shouldn’t drink coffee first thing in the morning”

Nutritionists like Pasquariello and Essani advise their clients to drink coffee before noon, because the peak effects of caffeine last for up to six hours. It can affect your sleep for several hours.

“I think one of the most common times when people feel tired and tend to overdose on caffeine is around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. [or] “That 4 p.m. slump,” says Pasquariello, and instead of grabbing another cup of coffee at that time, she recommends grabbing a snack that’s high in fiber, healthy fats, and protein to refuel.

There’s nothing wrong with drinking coffee first thing in the morning, Pasquariello says, but he advises that people with acid reflux should drink water and eat a little food first.

Pasquariello said clients have told her that drinking coffee first thing in the morning doesn’t necessarily make them feel good: “It makes you a little unsettled. It can give you an upset stomach.”

“I would recommend remembering to drink a glass of water first, or even together. [coffee] “Me too,” Ehsani said.

Myth #3: “Drinking more than two cups of coffee a day is too much”

Deepak Chopra told CNBC Make It that he drinks two to three cups of coffee before noon, and while that might seem like too much for most people, Pasqualiello and Ehsani say it’s actually within the healthy range.

“It’s safe to have a couple of cups before noon,” Ehsani says, “as long as the caffeine content doesn’t exceed 400 milligrams.” This includes the caffeine in soda, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate.

Many nutritionists recommend having food and water before drinking your daily cold brew or latte because “caffeine has appetite suppressant properties.”

“If you’re combining that,” Pasquariello said. [amount] “Take note of what you’re experiencing in the time you have available,” she says. Make sure you’re not using coffee as a meal replacement and keep an eye on whether it’s affecting your appetite.
