RENTON, Wash. — We’re learning more about a deadly virus that’s affecting several dogs along Western Washington, and one hotspot for the virus is a popular park in Renton.
“We’re seeing a huge fluctuation in pets testing positive for parvo,” says Alecia Dolman. happy tail animal hospital practice manager.
Happy Tails Animal Hospital in Renton is sounding the alarm about a deadly and highly contagious virus that dog owners should be aware of.
“If your pet is lethargic, doesn’t want to eat, and is vomiting, nine times out of 10 you’ll need to get your pet checked out, as this can cause bloody diarrhea,” Dolman says. says.
This veterinary hospital has only been open for about 9 months. However, according to Dolman, 10 to 12 animals have been infected with parvovirus so far, and unfortunately one of them did not survive. Dolman continues to urge communities to do more to prevent the spread of the virus.
“If people don’t scoop their (pet) poop, we know it’s the law. This is actually to prevent the spread of all kinds of diseases, like parasites and parvo. .So what if another disease emerges?” Dolman said. If an animal smells poop while walking, it can become infected that way. ”
Doleman said all of the cases her team has encountered are connected to the popular Renton park.
“They came from Petrovitsky Park, so that was a huge concern for us,” Dolman said.
KING 5 reached out to King County Parks regarding this concern. Officials said in part in a statement:
“We are aware of the reports and have asked for signs to be placed around the park, informing us that there have been reports of canine parvovirus infection in dogs that have recently visited Petrovitsky Park. It informs people and lists precautions.”
Meanwhile, Happy Tail Animal Hospital has parvovirus antidote in stock.
But veterinarians said the best thing owners can do to protect their pets is to ensure they are vaccinated.
