Obituary: John Stewart Dyhrberg M.D.

John Stewart Dyerberg MD

Portland – John Stewart Dyhrberg, MD, died on September 7, 2022 in Portland at the age of 77.

He was born in December 1944 to Lillian (Banstock) Dyerberg and Norman Dyerberg, MD. He attended school in Westbrook where he played football. He continued to attend and organize Westbrook alumni associations throughout his life.

After four years at Westbrook High School, he attended the University of Maine and became a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduation, he headed to Lincoln, Nebraska to attend the University of Nebraska Medical School.

After graduating from medical school, he did an internship at Maine Medical Center. After an internship, he joined the Navy and was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as part of the medical corps. His medical residency was spent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and once training was completed, he and his family moved back to their home in Maine. He continued his urology practice in Portland, and later in his career worked and lived in Australia and New Zealand during the winter months.

Throughout his adult life, John was an avid University of Nebraska sports fan. He was often known to sit in the “man cave” watching his football team lose to the beloved Cornhuskers. He also spent hours cooking and trying out new recipes. He enjoyed playing golf with his brother Larry and listening to his brother Tom’s music. He loves to travel and has visited far-flung places such as Australia, Mongolia, Laos and European countries with his partner Mary “Woody”.

Family was most important to John. His best friends were his brothers whom he admired dearly.

John was predeceased by his mother, Lillian (Bunstock) Dearberg, and his father, Norman Dearberg. and his brother, William Dyerberg.

He is survived by his longtime partner, Mary “Woody” Woodward. Two cats, Jango and Mickey, and a dog, Ralphie. He is also survived by his first wife and his best friend Katherine (Hall) Dearberg. Daughter Erica Dillberg. Their son, Jeff Dyerberg and his daughter-in-law, Stephanie (Hill) Dyerberg, and their two children, Kirsten and Marcus. Additionally, he is survived by his older brother Larry, his sister-in-law Michelle Fournier, and their two children, Caroline and Annika Derberg.He is also survived by his younger brother Tom and sister-in-law. He also left a sister, Jen Rich. Finally, he is also survived by his older brother Norman.
