After immigrating to the United States from the Philippines at the age of three, I grew up in the working-class neighborhoods of Detroit and its surroundings. He holds an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and his MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Prior to launching Yuvo Health in 2021, he was head of existing operations at Zocdoc, a platform that allows patients to book medical appointments, and Chief Solutions Officer at Healthify, which provides access to a network of social welfare organizations. What made you want to pursue a career in healthcare?
I didn’t get the details until college, but I grew up wanting to work in healthcare. received. FQHC has provided care to historically underserved communities and has given me the care, support and dignity of my family regardless of health insurance status.
What career achievement are you most proud of and why?
I am most proud to launch Yuvo Health with my three co-founders. All in all, we share a deep-seated mission. It is about being an advocate and protector for those who have been historically disenfranchised and whose people in low-income communities may struggle to access care.
What is the most difficult part of your current position?
The lack of access to healthcare in the United States extends far beyond healthcare itself. Health inequalities in our country are a function of institutional racism and classism — deeply rooted problems. Much more remains to be done by policy makers on a broader scale to improve
What is your organization doing to address equity in healthcare?
FQHC are the ‘boots on the ground’ in underserved communities, providing care to those most in need. They also face unique operational challenges that impede the growth needed to meet demand. Yuvo Health is helping FQHC serve more members of its community by connecting it to value-based contracting and management services. This will allow FQHC to raise its revenue model to a more sustainable one. FQHC will then be empowered to reach out to more people who need access to care.
If you could change one thing in U.S. healthcare, what would it be?
We want equal access to healthcare for everyone, regardless of geography, socioeconomic status, race, culture or language. He has 20 million low-income people in the United States who do not have access to FQHC and need primary care, according to the Department of Health Resources Services. As providers continue to create a healthcare ecosystem that pays significantly more to Medicaid patients than commercial insurance patients, this access gap will not go away.
How do you avoid burnout?
He avoids burnout by spending quality time with his three kids and wife. I tend to feel like I need to be available all the time, so I add personal time slots to my calendar that I can’t schedule. For example, there are time blocks for workouts and school drop-offs every morning, and dinner time with the family every night. Even if it’s only for a short amount of time each day, getting away from work really helps me focus on my work.
