Mark Edward Toman
MD was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 15, 1936 and fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, September 15, 2022 in Tucson, Arizona. Mark was born to Greek immigrant Tathra Petrakis He was the son of Toman and Texas artist John Charles. Toman. Mark grew up in Chicago, Illinois until he was nine years old, after which his family moved to Independence, Missouri. After Mark graduated from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He went into reserve after a post-boot camp injury. During his reserve service, Mark attended and graduated from Graceland Junior College. He is from the University of Missouri. University of Missouri School of Medicine. In 1965, after completing a pediatric residency in Des Moines, Iowa, Mark took his oath of office at the U.S. Public Health Service and reported to Washington, DC. The following year, he transferred to his service at Indian Health and became chief of pediatrics at a hospital on the Navajo Reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico. He was proud to have learned enough Navajo to do a medical history and physical exam without an interpreter. Upon completion of his mission, he was commended by his elders with several sand paintings that he treasured throughout his life. In 1967, he moved with his family to Des Moines, Iowa, where he was a beloved pediatrician for over 30 years. He cared for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation of children in his family who value his skills, humor, friendly reassurance and supportive demeanor. While in Des Moines, he started and directed a Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. He was the medical director of the Iowa Poison Control Center. He was a faculty member and consultant at the Des Moines Police Academy and he was a Des Moines Fire Department. He has been a member of several medical schools and served as a guest instructor. In collaboration with other physicians, Mark founded the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology beginning in 1968. He has served as the journal’s editor, president, and member of its board of directors. For his efforts, the American Medical Toxicology Board, later named the American Society of Medical Toxicology, is now recognized as a subspecialty by the American Committee of Medical Experts. Throughout his career, Mark also helped found several other medical societies and programs and authored hundreds of journal articles on toxicology and pediatrics. He received many professional honors. After closing the clinic in 2000, he became Chief Medical Officer of Broadlawns Hospital. Like many active people, he never really retired and was busy reviewing journal articles and writing editorials.In addition to his personal activities, Mark joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1988. joined the He enlisted as a commander. He achieved the rank of captain. He served as flight surgeon on the USS Abraham Lincoln. Mark loved aviation and eventually became a private pilot. This experience led to working as a senior consultant and faculty member for the FAA. Of particular interest to him was the safety of childhood vaccines, and he has been writing for more than a decade on the mortality and morbidity of certain childhood vaccines. His work and interests have led him to be commissioned to field test new vaccines in his own practice. His flair and humor, his passionate piano playing (self-taught, played by ear), and his talent and ability to entertain crowds with his masterful speaking skills have made him one of the most celebrated performers of all time in his long life, both public and private. has become an unforgettable presenter and entertainer at both public events. Mark married Teresa Thompson, the love of his life, in 1984. The two spent happy days in Johnston, Iowa before moving to the Pacific Northwest, where he eventually moved to Tucson in 2021. He is survived by his wife Teresa (Thompson) Toman, sisters Elizabeth (“Nicki”) Fisher and Lee Accord, and his children, Marlisa Toman, Susan (Larry Schlosser) Toman, Ed Toman and Nancy Nucci (Todd Smith). , Janet Toman, JD (Eric Poland), David Toman.
