Dr. James E. Mraz, 85, died peacefully Tuesday, September 20, 2022, surrounded by family at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was born in Erie on his October 9, 1936, son of the late Dr. John J. and Janet (Harkins) Mraz.
Jim graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School, Allegheny College, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He completed an orthopedic residency at the University of Buffalo after serving his country honorably for two years in the United States Navy.
Jim was one of the founders of Orthopedic Surgeons, Inc. and spent the next 30 years serving his hometown population as an orthopedic surgeon working with St. Vincent’s Hospital. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. Jim also enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He had bragging rights to his three holes he had one. He was a member of the Siebenbuerger Club, the Mennerkol Club and the Kakuwa Club.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters Jeannie Constable and her husbands Joseph and Judy Avanpat, and brother-in-law Edward and his wife Jeanine Seibolt.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carolyn (Hale) Mraz, and four sons James, Greg (Lori), Mark and Matthew. and his precious granddaughter, Sarah Grace. He also has a brother, Dr. John “Jack” Mraz, a sister, Joyce Mraz, a brother-in-law, Charles Avanpat, two sisters-in-law, Mary Kay (Hale) Leonard and husband Al, Jane Reuter. and Jane Reuter and her husband Dave. and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory at 1595 West 38th Street on Mondays from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Worship services are held at 10:30 am on Tuesdays, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 am at St George’s Church. The burial will take place in the cemetery at Heaven’s Gate.
