Hilda Jaffe has simple advice for those who want to live to be 100: choose your parents carefully.
Jaffe believes good genes played a big role in her 100-year lifespan. Her father died in her late 80’s and her mother lived on into her 90’s.
Unlike biohackers who guzzle smoothies to cheat death, Jaffe doesn’t worry too much about his diet. Originally from Brooklyn, our tour guides at the vibrant New York Public Library adhere to simple, nourishing daily meals and routines.
About once a week she walks three blocks to a local diner. It is now located on her 9th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
She took a seat and ordered one of her favourites, without looking too much at the menu. This week was:
She doesn’t take much trouble perusing the menu. After all, it’s just typical “diner food,” she told the insider. However, her diet still has the right mix of carbs and protein, a great combination that many nutrition experts recommend for sustained energy.
Occasionally, she’ll even change the order to opt for sweet French toast, a savory burger, or a different style of eggs.
At home, she adheres to a slightly more plant-based diet. Dinner is usually a salad with added protein. Earlier in the day, she might make her own eggs or a small cheese or meat sandwich.
Jaffe finds it a feat to be so self-sufficient at his age. She has participated in multiple studies investigating the genetics of longevity, investigating why people like her live much longer than average with excellent mental and physical health.
“Doctors are all amazed,” she says with a laugh.
