A new viral disease known as monkeypox is considered a global health emergency. The condition has persisted for more than 50 years, but the current increase in cases and accumulated knowledge about it require practitioners to make a more focused assessment. We provided a detailed overview of symptoms, assessment, and treatment.
The orthopoxvirus that causes monkeypox is endemic in central and western Africa. A global health emergency was declared in July 2022 due to outbreaks in Asia, Europe, North and South America in May and June 2022. expand. Lymphadenopathy and prodromal influenza-like illness are symptoms of the disease. An efferent rash affecting the face, palms, soles, and oral mucosa is common. Lesions develop in several stages. Complications such as encephalitis, pneumonia, eye disease, and bacterial skin infections were rarely experienced. Tests using the polymerase chain reaction are frequently used for confirmation. As of July 2022, there are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs specifically for monkeypox, and most patients recover with symptomatic treatment. However, antiviral therapy should be considered in some patient groups at risk of severe outcome.
Emergency physicians must be fully aware of the emergence, evaluation, and management of monkeypox to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of this growing disease.
