Ayurveda uses a variety of herbs known for their beneficial properties in promoting eye health and managing cataracts. Two notable herbs are:
1. Triphala: Dr. Mandeep Singh Bhath, Director of Jagat Pharma and Bhas Eye Hospital, said: Supports eye health, reduces inflammation and protects against oxidative damage. It can be taken by mouth or used as an eyewash to relieve symptoms of cataracts. “
2. Yashti Madhu (Licorice Root): Yashti Madhu has anti-inflammatory properties and is very effective in reducing eye irritation. Helps prevent free radical damage that can contribute to the development and progression of cataracts.
“Other Ayurvedic herbs that help with eye health include ashwagandha, ghee (clarified butter), honey, turmeric, fennel (saunhu/madhurika), coriander, and saffron. It has rejuvenating properties, reduces inflammation, protects against oxidative damage, and nourishes the eye,” says Dr Bass.
