Dartmouth Health program helps address youth mental health

Although the national emergency caused by COVID-19 is over, problems exacerbated during the pandemic continue, including mental health struggles among teenagers and children. The healthcare organization offers the third installment of its Project ECHO educational series. While his first two were primarily aimed at schools and teachers, this one is designed for the community. Dr. Julie Balaban, director of child and adolescent psychiatry at Dartmouth Health, said isolation during the pandemic exacerbated many mental health problems, especially in her teens. “Our hope was that a vaccine would be developed and schools would reopen, which would solve a lot of this problem, but it hasn’t,” Dartmouth Health said.

Balaban said isolation during the pandemic has exacerbated many mental health issues.

“Now, historically this is a trend that increases the problem, especially for children and teens, but it actually seemed to spike with COVID,” she said.

Bi-weekly web-based sessions are aimed at anyone working with children.

“And we may be able to identify and offer support to children who may be struggling,” Balaban said.

There are many signs to look out for, but organizers said one is simply whether children are showing up.

“Absence is a big red flag, so you’re not attending school or participating in the activities you used to do,” Balaban said.
