Obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, according to a World Health Organization report for 2022. More than 1 billion people worldwide are clinically obese, of which 650 million are adults, 340 million are adolescents and 39 million are children. If current trends continue, the prevalence of obesity is expected to rise, but new obesity treatments are entering the market.

Wegovy is one of several new “miracle” drugs that promise to revolutionize the weight loss industry.

Praised by celebrities and social media influencers, Wegovy has been approved for use in the free healthcare system in the United States as well as the United Kingdom, and will be available to patients in Spring 2023.

“This drug is really changing the obesity treatment paradigm right now. Weekly injections have helped 15- to 17-year-olds lose nearly 20 percent of their weight,” Citi pharmaceutical analyst Peter Verdult told CNBC. .
