Martin County, Florida (WFLA) — Eight minors escaped from a mental health clinic in Florida after a riot broke out among residents.
NBC affiliate WPTV reported Fifty of the 130 residents of Sandy Pines Treatment Center were involved in a riot after a fight broke out.
Sandy Pines describes itself as a behavioral health treatment center for children and adolescents.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said three people, including a staff member, were injured in the riot.
“People involved in the incident smashed windows, smashed furniture, and had a big fight before a group of boys escaped from the facility.
Eight minors fled the riot but were later arrested and taken to the Fort Pierce juvenile detention center on various charges, agents said. A total of 12 minors were arrested in the riot, including the fugitive.
