A lot has been said about lemon water, from those who say it has magical properties to those who say it does absolutely nothing. Neither extreme is entirely correct. No miracle drink works, but lemon water does have a number of benefits for our body. Nutritionist and dietician Dr. Montse Forcha talks about this healthy drink.
Can lemon water help prevent bloating?
Most advocates of drinking lemon water (usually warm) often do so in the morning or on an empty stomach to cleanse the body and jump-start metabolism. “Lemon not only tastes sour, but it’s also an acid,” says Dr. Forcha. “It has an alkalizing, or detoxifying, effect on the body, which helps prevent and improve abdominal bloating.” She also recommends spices such as fennel, basil, parsley, dill, cumin, and coriander that can be mixed into lemon water to enhance this effect. However, it’s important to clarify that this drink won’t flatten your belly, it will just reduce the feeling of bloating.
Can lemon water help improve digestion?
“Lemon water helps produce stomach acid,” says Dr. Forcha, “which in turn improves digestion in general. However, if you have excess stomach acid, you shouldn’t try lemon water, as it may make your condition worse.”
Does lemon water quench your thirst?
“Lemon contains many organic acids, including citric acid, which stimulates saliva production and quenches thirst more than plain water,” says Dr. Forcha, though be sure to mix it with water: pure lemon can damage tooth enamel.
Does lemon water improve the appearance of your skin?
Your skin loves Vitamin C, which is found in all citrus fruits, including lemons. Research suggests It’s well-known that taking vitamin C can have a positive impact on the appearance of your skin, and Dr. Forcha agrees: “Vitamin C is essential for the proper functioning of blood vessels, healthy bones, teeth and skin. It also aids in collagen production, improving the appearance of skin and helping wounds heal properly.”
Is lemon water good for your overall health?
In addition to aiding digestion and skin health, drinking lemon water regularly is great for your overall health, says Dr. Forcha. “It stimulates your immune system, giving you a better chance of fighting off infection,” she says. Plus, it’s great for when you’re feeling sick; adding a bit of honey or ginger can help ease cold symptoms.
