Independence Day is officially approaching. We all look forward to cookouts, parades, and festive celebrations, but as part of the holiday, it can be a concern for pet owners. It’s fireworks. Here are some expert-approved tips to keep your dog calm during fireworks.
Please wear them.
If it’s not too hot, take your dog for a long walk before the fireworks start to make sure he’s calm and tired.
Then make sure they are indoors.
“Dogs run away when they’re frightened, so 4th of July is the most common holiday for pets to run away or get lost,” explains Dr. Early. Keep your puppy in its usual room, but also make sure it has an ID collar and microchip just in case.
Play some music or keep the TV on.
“Anything they can do to dampen the loudness of fireworks sounds like the end of the world to them.” Animal trainer Nicole Ellis was told before Country life.
If you are at home with them, stay calm.
The American Kennel Club recommends Stay home with your puppy if possible, and if so, try to be quiet in the midst of loud noises. “If your dog is scared, you can and should definitely comfort them,” says Certified Behavioral Consultant and Professional Dog Trainer of the North Carolina-based Awesome Pawsabilities Pet Training & Behavior Councils. Co-owner Jen Stanley told AKC. “The key here is how you do it. It’s important to speak in a calm, calm, even tone. Stroking them can be soothing. Along the entire length of their body.” A long, slow, firm stroke is usually very soothing.”
Consider medication.
Some dogs may need additional help with medication. “If your pet is particularly sensitive, ask your veterinarian about calming medications,” Dr. Early says.
